Best Films of 2012

People are often asking me for recommendations, so each year I offer a listing of my own top films -- dramas and documentaries -- from the previous year.

All of these films have been reviewed on this blog!

Best Israeli feature films of 2012

  • ·         Ballad of the Weeping Spring by Benny Torati for those who love music
  • ·         Yossi by Eytan Fox -- the sequel to Yossi and Jagger
  • ·         The World is Funny by Shemi Zarchin, a quirky film about the fine line between tragedy and comedy, about whether stories reflect reality or reality is just a story being told, about bereavement and family relationships,  about living in the past and not being able to cope with the present, about living in the world of fiction when reality is too difficult to bear.
  • ·         Fill the Void by Rama Burshtein about love in the haredi community
  • ·         God's Neighbors by Meni Yaesh about religious fanaticism

Best documentary films of 2012

  • ·         Fringes by Paula Weiman-Kelman  about issues of Jewish identity and quirky choices of Jewish lifestyle
  • ·         Wind, Darkness, Water by Yahaly Gat about the life and music of Naomi Shemer
  • ·         Six Million and One by David Fisher in which the filmmaker and his siblings travel to Austria in the footsteps of their father who was a forced laborer there during the Holocaust

and two documentaries from last year that are still on my "best" list

  • ·         Life in Stills by Tamar Tal about a unique relationship between a 96-year-old woman and her grandson and their photography shop in Tel Aviv
  • ·         The Flat by Arnon Goldfinger about the filmmaker's grandparents, who were German Jews living in Tel Aviv, and their very special world view

Best documentary films of 2012 dealing with security issues and issues of the Occupation

  • ·         Five Broken Cameras by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi
  • ·         The Gatekeepers by Dror Moreh
  • ·         Good Garbage by Ada Ushpiz and Shosh Shlam
  • ·         and one from last year -- The Law in these Parts by Ra'anan Alexandrowicz
